Tanya Avina, Director of English Learner Programs in the Office of K-12 Educational Services at Garden Grove Unified School District, oversees multilingual pathways, including dual language immersion, heritage language programs, and English Learner assessment/reclassification. She also coordinates departments managing the CALNew grant (Newcomers), migrant education, the CA Community Schools grant, and K-12 college/career mentoring. Starting at GGUSD in 2002 as a language arts teacher supporting English learners and Gifted and Talented students, she helped make Doig Intermediate an AVID National Demonstration Site. She later served as a district instructional coach in Secondary Education, promoting college and career readiness through AVID. Her administrative roles include Assistant Principal at Santiago High School and Principal at Newhope Elementary. An alumna of California State University, Fullerton (B.A. English, M.S. Secondary Education), she is currently a doctoral candidate in K-12 Educational Leadership at USC’s Rossier School of Education. Tanya is dedicated to systemic supports ensuring equitable access for all students, especially from marginalized communities.
